MEN OF HONOR
Written by Captain Mary on Thursday, October 02, 2008After having my pay T.V. service suspended I have been going through some of my long lost video's and found one that I hadn't seen in awhile. Men of Honor, a great movie based on a true story. I have a special interest in true stories and history, this particular one is about Navy deep sea divers in the 1950's.
It's about a man who wanted to become a deep sea diver in the face of adversity. He came from a share cropper background, joined the military during a time that prejudice was high. Opportunity for black men was very limited, but he never gave up trying to reach his goals. This story is a great one for anyone who thinks about giving up, this man didn't give up no matter what the odds. He over came obstacles and hurdles that only determination could conquer.
As a diver and captain I appreciate the call of the sea. For every time I take my boat out and I reach the last channel marker leading toward the sea; it's like a veil is lifted from my soul. I look out toward the deep blue water and all my worries and sadness disappear. I find myself smiling uncontrollably and I don't understand it, all I know is that this is the place I am most happy. My next vision could be of dolphins jumping and playing, stingrays flipping into the air, or even whales exhaling. The sense of something incredible and maybe even dangerous, exhilarating my existence.
